TCOT Podcast Episode 082 - Blushing Pearls

TCOT Podcast Episode 082 - Blushing Pearls

Season 3 - Episode 4

Originally aired - October 24, 1959

Japan's surrender at the end of World War II was a result of multiple factors, including the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Soviet Union's declaration of war, and the devastating impact of the war on the Japanese mainland. The surrender ceremony took place on September 2, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, officially ending the war in Asia.

Dee Spills the Tea:

One of the few black people you’ll ever see on PM – William Walker – Five interesting facts

  1. William Walker was the grandson of slaves.
  2. Best known as Rev. Sykes in To Kill a Mockingbird.
  3. Gregory Peck won an academy award for his portrayal of the attorney Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. In his acceptance speech, he singled out Walker for his contribution to the film.
  4. Walker was most proud of his membership in the Screen Actors Guild, where he served on the board for over 20 years.  He boasted about being “speaking cousins” with Ronald Reagan who served as SAG president. In 1953 with Reagan at his side, Walker pleaded with a gathering of Hollywood producers to hire more black actors.
  5. He was quoted as saying “I had a lot of arguments with directors. Most of them knew nothing about how a Negro feels, how he lives, what he thinks.”

The Terrified Typist first intrigued me when I heard on a television advertisement that Perry Mason actually lost a case. I was determined to find out which episode contained this blight on an otherwise perfect record! When I first watched it, I really enjoyed the first tense minutes, when Mrs. Taylor in disguise is caught and then flees into the building, hiding in sight in Masons law office. I was then on the edge of my seat when the guilty verdict is delivered. I really liked the unique twist of a defendant in disguise. I enjoy when Hamilton Burger loses his temper a little after being bested by a Mason legal trap and this one was a great meltdown when the real Jefferson shows up.

I have seen all nine seasons but tend to stick to the ones based on the books as I find the plots more complex and engaging. This episode was a solid book adaptation.

Thanks for the episode walkthrough. Looking forward to more!

Kevin

Dee Spills the Tea:

Joanna Moore led an interesting albeit difficult life. When she was 7 her parents and younger sister were involved in a fatal car accident; her mother and sister died immediately; her father a year later. She was then adopted by a local wealthy family.

She married Ryan O’Neal in 1963 and was the mother of academy award winning actress Tatum O’Neal.

In the early 60s, she lost her hearing and had to read lips. An operation restored her hearing in 1962.

Beginning in 1970 Moore began a downward spiral. She checked into a hospital for psychiatric treatment; then she was arrested for drunk driving and lost custody of her two children. By the late 70s, she was being financially supported by Tatum. Despite treatment she continued to be addicted to drugs and alcohol and she was arrested five times for DUI during the 80s. She died of lung cancer in 1997 at the age of 63.

Where Do They Go From Here?

Mr and Mrs Loomis and Kincaid goes to jail. Mr & Mrs Taylor live happily ever after.

Here come the Judge! (5 Little known facts about the judge Morris Ankrum)
1.     He was born Morris Nussbaum, then used the name Stephen Morris and finally changed it to Morris Ankrum. Okay I give up. Why? It seems a strange stage name. I like Stephen Morris.
2.     He didn’t become an actor until he was in his 30s.
3.     He was an attorney and an economics professor before switching careers and becoming an actor.
4.     He was featured as a judge in 22 episodes of Perry Mason.
5.     His final appearance on Perry Mason was in the episode "The Case of the Sleepy Slayer." It aired in 1964, after Ankrum’s death.
