Dee Spills the Tea:

Pat Breslin was a fellow Marylander at least for part of her life and she was a philanthropist. Breslin married Art Modell in 1969. Art Modell was the owner of the Cleveland Browns which later became the Baltimore Ravens. They relocated to Owings Mills, Maryland in 1995, which is a suburb of Baltimore. They donated $5 million to the SEED School of Maryland, a public boarding school for the disadvantaged. They also donated $3.5 million to help restore the Lyric Opera House, which is a Baltimore venue. Breslin served on the boards of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Walters Art Museum and also donated to the Baltimore Museum of Art.

In 1924 Neil Hamilton (Frank Livesey) starred in an historical romance called America. The movie takes place during the Revolutionary War and during filming, a soldier’s arm was shot off. Neil and another actor in the film, Charles Emmet Mack, took it upon themselves to visit neighboring towns, put on a show and collect money for this soldier.

William Hopper a/k/a Paul Drake initially tested for the role of Perry Mason, while Raymond Burr initially read for the role of district attorney Hamilton Burger. They called William Hopper back for a second reading. Executive producer Gail Patrick Jackson recalled, "When Bill Hopper came in to read for Paul Drake he blurted out, 'You hate my mother.' His mother was Hedda Hopper a famous gossip columnist who was known for reporting untruths, half truths, ruining careers and she supported the House Un American activities Committee, which blackballed many actors suspected of communism. Jackson responded Well, I disliked what she stood for, but 'hate' is something else — and anyway he was perfect as Drake, and we got him.”

Dee Spills the Tea:

We touched on a number of subjects last week and we promised to get back to each of them. One of them was Raymond Burr’s weight.

Burr reportedly weighed over 12 pounds at birth. and was chubby throughout his childhood. He said in an interview "When you're a little fat boy in public school, or any kind of school, you're just persecuted something awful."

Raymond Burr was sixty pounds overweight when the producer wanted him for the part of Perry Mason. Burr was determined and went on a crash diet, losing the extra weight and landing the iconic role. He eventually gained all that weight back and when the series ended he weighed close to 300 pounds.

His weight was always an issue for him and it became a public relations problem when Johnny Carson began making jokes about him during his Tonight Show monologues. (The Tonight Show which now stars Jimmy Fallon, starred Johnny Carson from 1962-1992). It got so bad that Burr refused to appear as Carson's guest. He told Us Weekly: "I have been asked a number of times to do his show and I won't do it. If I went on I'd have some things to say, not just about the bad jokes he's done about me, but bad jokes he does about everybody who can't fight back because they aren't there.

Awwww, poor Ray!
