The Case of the Podcast is a Perry Mason Fan Podcast. We love and enjoy episodes from a tv show from the late 1950’s and early 1960. It’s so old, it was filmed in Black & White.

Dee spills the tea: Were any of the actors really injured?

In 1965, during season 8,  in four consecutive episode Raymond Burr wore a cast or sling on his arm and shoulder. Sometimes the sling was visible and sometimes the arm was hidden under his suit coat. He claimed he was injured in a helicopter crash on one of his many tours of Vietnam to entertain the troops.

Author Jim Davidson wrote “The Perry Mason Book: A Comprehensive Guide to America’s Favorite Defender of Justice” which you can get in a Kindle edition from Amazon.

He discovered that the truth is somewhat different. He writes that the injury - a torn bicep tendon - occurred on a beach in Hawaii, not Viet Nam, and there was no helicopter involved. Burr had a history of telling a few tall tales, and apparently, this was one of them.

During season 2, specifically, episode 17, the Romantic Rogue you’ll notice that Hamilton Burger is wearing a cast and ambling about on crutches.  Just before this episode was shot, William Talman injured his right leg; it’s disputed whether it was a broken leg or a simple injury. It was right before taping and the writers had no choice but to work this into the script. I would dispute it was a broken leg since he only wore crutches that one episode, but who knows?

If you have any further information about either of these injuries, let us know.

And that the tea for today!

Next week will be:

The Case of the Final Fade-Out
