Barbara Hale and Raymond Burr: What was the deal between those two?
We have speculated over and over about a romance between Perry and Della. But what about Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale, the characters’ real-life counterparts. Were they every romantically involved? Were they even friends? We needed to know. The answer to the first question is no, but the answer to the second is yes, they were very good friends. As a matter of fact, Hale described Burr as part of her family, like a brother.
Burr and Hale met at RKO studios, where they were both under contract. She said he was one of the first people she met at the studio when she started in the early 1940s. They got to know each other pretty well and they were both popular actors. They each appeared in over 50 movies and tv shows before they were cast in Perry Mason. During the show’s run, publicists tried to promote the idea of a romance between Burr and Hale, in reality that never happened. Burr visited with Hale and her family (a husband and 3 children).
After Mason, Burr went on to do Ironsides and Hale appeared in one episode. In 1985 Burr was approached to do a Perry Mason movie. He agreed, if Hale would appear as Della Street. Unfortunately, all of the other characters from the series had died. Burr and Hale did 26 Mason movies together.
They were both interested in horticulture. Burr owned an orchid company, and named one of his flowers the "Barbara Hale Orchid."
Burr was a world traveler and often upon returning from one of his trips would call Hale. “I’ll pick you up in an hour” he would say, and she and her husband and Burr would go out together. She said her husband loved it.
Hale is quoted as saying: "Raymond always said, 'When we started, I was holding your children and now we're holding your grandchildren.' " She also said Burr had a great sense of humor. They were friends up until Burr’s death in 1993.
In an interview after Burr’s death, Hale talked about the last Perry Mason movie they made “The last Kiss,” during which Burr had cancer and could barely stand. "He was my hero," said Hale, "He was in such pain, such terrible pain. But that man had such strength and such willpower. He was a very, very strong, beautiful human. I shall miss him all my life."
Hale was one of the few people who knew the truth about Burr’s relationship with Benevides, and she and Benevides remained friends after Burr’s death.
