What happened to Reginald Gardiner’s arm? Or hand?
Reginald Gardiner (Al Charity) was a popular actor whose career spanned over 50 years in radio, film and TV. One thing you’ll notice about him in tv and film is that his left arm was almost always hidden. Sometimes he held it in his pocket. You’ll notice in the screen shot that he’s holding his left hand and holding it rather oddly. There is speculation over exactly what was wrong and how it happened. Some things I read said that his left arm was paralyzed. Another said that it was just his hand that was damaged. Here’s the suggestion I found most interesting. Gardiner dated Hedy Lamarr, who was also a popular actress in the 30s, 40s and 50s. They dated in early 1938, but remained friends. He even painted her portrait. It was said that he hurt his hand or arm, when he fell from a fire escape while chasing her. I tried and tried but couldn’t find additional deets on this one. If anyone knows, please tell us. But either way, it didn’t stop or even hinder his long career.
