The Case of the Podcast is a Perry Mason Fan Podcast. We love and enjoy episodes from a tv show from the late 1950’s and early 1960. It’s so old, it was filmed in Black & White.
This is an episode from season 7 that we are choosing at random using a random number generator. We will be choosing our episodes this way season by season. We’re excited by this new process which will give each season a chance to shine.

Dee Spills the Tea:
Maxwell Reed – Did he or didn’t he?
Maxwell Reed (Chet Worth) was a matinee idol in British films during the 1940s and 1950s. Reed was the first husband of actress Joan Collins (of Dynasty fame), whom he married on May 24, 1952. He is reported to have raped her when dating and she married him out of shame. In a 2022 BBC documentary Joan claimed she was raped by Reed when she was a 17-year-old virgin. Collins alleged the incident happened after the actor, then 31, spiked her rum and Coke at his apartment.
In the same documentary she shared how the split between her and Reed came about. Collins said it occurred after a night out at the “terribly chic nightclub” Les Ambassadeurs in London. Joan said “Max had a habit of gravitating towards rich, elderly men, and I was starting to get a vague idea of what this was all about. That night he told Joan ‘He’ll pay you £10,000 for one night—and I can even watch.’ I looked at my handsome, loathsome husband and began to cry. ‘Never in a million years.’ I went home to Mummy.”
They were separated in 1954 and the marriage ended in divorce in 1956, after which Reed sued her for alimony, claiming that he had earned only $1,000 over the previous 12 months. He later withdrew this claim. Reed died in 1974 at the age of 55.
