In November 1969 (well after his PM appearance), Tully traveled to Vietnam on a USO tour. While in Vietnam, Tully contracted a filarial worm, similar to the creature that causes elephantiasis. After returning to the United States, his condition worsened. There was a blood clot and his left leg was amputated close to the hip. He suffered Complications from his surgery which caused pleuritis, deafness, and serious debilitation. But he continued to act! In 1973, he appeared in a movie called Charley Varrick, and he played a crooked gun dealer, who was in a wheelchair.
