Dee Spills the Tea:
Joel Fluellen: an activist as well as an actor.Fluellen was born in 1908 in Louisiana. Prior to beginning his acting career, he resided in Chicago where he worked as a milliner and store clerk. He gained his first role as a bit player in Cabin in the Sky in 1943. Fluellen, as a member of the Screen Actors Guild, tried to get SAG to protect their Black members against discrimination. He submitted numerous resolutions urging the union to do so. The guild, headed by Ronald Reagan at the time, repeatedly rebuffed his resolutions. Fluellen became an early member of the Negro Actors Guild of America, whose mission was to provide better opportunities for Black actors. Fluellen acted until the 1970s mostly as a film extra in mainstream films. He did, however, gain notable exposure in all-black films such as The Jackie Robinson Story (1950) and A Raisin in the Sun (1960). Unfortunately, Fluellen suffered health problems and was becoming blind toward the end of his life. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot in 1990.
